Kelan Koning is an adjunct writing instructor at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). During her sixteen years working for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at CSUN, she managed communications and in-house outreach and follow-up for over 24,000 interested applicants, in the process becoming a mentor to hundreds of historically marginalized and underserved students. Kelan's higher ed journey began at Portland Community College where she found her voice and rebuilt confidence. She graduated from University of Oregon with a BA in English and completed all coursework for a teaching credential at California State University, Northridge, but found her passion teaching at the college level, ultimately earning an MA in English-Creative Writing.
Having been a low-income, first generation student who spent part of high school in a legal guardianship, Kelan is deeply committed to supporting historically marginalized students in their higher ed journey. She credits 3CSN for providing professional learning that has given her many tools and strategies she needs to do this life-changing work. She is a Reading Apprenticeship practitioner who completed the Reading Apprenticeship Leadership Community of Practice as well as 3CSN’s Integrated Reading and Writing Community. She weaves Disability Justice and Trauma-Responsive SEL in the classroom and is passionate about whole-semester ePortfolio projects and ungrading as part of this work. You can find her co-facilitating our 3CSN ePortfolio design labs or supporting many of our 3CSN sessions. In her free time she enjoys photography, travel, collage art, reading, writing poetry, and thrifting. You may contact her at kelan@3csn.org
