To kick off the academic year, Gavilan and 3CSN co-sponsored an Introductory Reading Apprenticeship Workshop on Friday, 9/9/16. Participants (students, faculty, tutors, and Supplemental Instruction leaders) came from Hartnell College, Gavilan College, CSU Monterey Bay, Evergreen College, Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey, Foothill College, Cabrillo College and Gonzales Adult School. The day included modeling of several key Reading Apprenticeship routines followed by practice and discussion. In the photo, participants are debriefing the Talking to the Text experience they had with a text from a Physics textbook. With each activity, the group’s Reading Strategies List grew (see photo) and provided rich background for metacognitive conversations. The day concluded with lesson planning activities to support educators in integrating an RA routine into their practice.
