3CSN sponsored two Reading Apprenticeship events in Northern California in February. On February 19, STEM faculty and Instructional Assistants from nearly 10 Northern California community colleges gathered at College of San Mateo for a Reading Apprenticeship in STEM workshop. The co-facilitators, representing Biology, Math, and Chemistry, are part of the Reading Apprenticeship Community College STEM Network and teach at College of San Mateo, Canada College, and American River College. They provided an overview of the Reading Apprenticeship framework and guided participants through several Reading Apprenticeship routines particularly useful for teaching STEM courses. The pictures below represent several of theses strategies: Creating a Reading Strategies List Think Aloud Talking to the Text On February 26, San Jose City College hosted a one-day Reading Apprenticeship event. With the goal of making the invisible
visible to our students, attendees spent the day learning how to invite our students into Reading as problem-solving through the Reading Apprenticeship framework. Attendees experienced core Reading Apprenticeship routines like the Norms List. Setting norms invite students into community and establish a foundation of respect and engagement necessary to apprentice students into disciplinary ways of reading and engaging in metacognition.
