Deeper STEM Learning Through Metacognitive Conversation: a Reading Apprenticeship Workshop — Rio Hondo College (4/21/17)

RA LogoWhat is the Relationship Among Literacy, Metacognition, and STEM Content Knowledge?  And What Can We Do About It?

This highly interactive workshop will engage participants in metacognitive conversations centered on complex disciplinary texts that defeat many students. By discovering and reflecting on their own ways of unlocking STEM graphs, charts, illustrations, and problems, and so forth, participants will experience ways the Reading Apprenticeship approach helps students master core concepts and helps instructors explicitly support academic literacy in their discipline. Participants will learn how to bring a Reading Apprenticeship initiative to their campus and will be invited to join the thousands of faculty already part of California’s statewide community of practice, the Reading Apprenticeship Project.

The Reading Apprenticeship framework draws on the strengths students and faculty bring to build confidence and power to their work with texts, concepts, and each other.

PARKING INFO:  Participants will need to pick up a permit from the Parking booth and will  park in Student Lot C.  Click HERE for a campus map.
