OPPORTUNITY
Are you a full- or part-time California Community College or California State University mathematics instructor?
Do you want a professional learning experience that will allow you to go deeper into the nuts and bolts of remote instruction? One where you explore ways to design and support active and equitable learning?
Yes to all of the above? Excellent! This is your invitation: Please join the Apprenticing Students into Mathematical Thinking effort. Be part of a supportive improvement community to exchange ideas and materials as the group navigates new contexts for teaching and learning. Over a ten-month professional learning course, you will:
- Experience asynchronous (Canvas) and synchronous (Zoom) online learning as learners while thinking through how to best use these modalities in their own teaching;
- Integrate knowledge of how learning works and of equitable teaching practices into course redesign efforts, using the Reading Apprenticeship framework;
- Identify zero cost texts (Open Educational Resources – OERs) which support opportunities to practice reading, writing, questioning, and problem solving in the math you teach;
- Use backward design methodology to plan lessons, units, and curriculum.
BENEFITS
- Supportive improvement community and individual coaching
- $1000 stipend upon completion of course (May 2021)
- Optional Extended Educational units available
EXPECTATIONS
- Attend all synchronous workshops (via Zoom) and complete all asynchronous (via Canvas) assignments (see “Course Details”below)
- Participate in program evaluation activities, including surveys, reflections, and classroom visits
- Share artifacts from your coursework (e.g., videos and lesson plans built around OER texts)
COURSE DETAILS
The course consists of (1) three intensive, multi-day synchronous institutes via Zoom, (2) monthly 2-hour learning community meetings via Zoom, and (3) ~2 hours of asynchronous work each month via Canvas.
