Habits of Mind — Mission College (9/25/15)

 This intructory workshop explores the Habits of Mind needed by students to succeed in college and the workplace.  A common framework used across the state to cultivate Habits of Mind will be shared, along with examples of campus-wide activities and classroom practice.  To understand the Habits up close, we will examine samples of classroom assignments to surface relevant Habits.  We conclude with a discussion around the role of the Habits in supporting disciplinary understanding and modes of thought.

Jan Connal, Ph.D. , is an Educational Psychologist serving as the Habits of Mind Coordinator for the California Community Colleges’ Success Network (3CSN), funded through the Chancellor’s Office.  Over a 36-year career she has developed a depth of knowledge about improving student success and gained extensive experience coordinating projects, developing and evaluating programs and providing professional development.  

Through the Faculty Inquiry Network, funded for three years by the Hewlett Foundation, Jan assisted colleges as an inquiry coach to support the professional development of faculty engaged in action research.  

At Cerritos College, in addition to being an Academic Counselor and Instructor, Jan works across campus to coordinate SLO assessment activities and evidence-based effective practices.  She facilitated her college’s Carnegie Foundation SPECC Project and engaged the Visible Knowledge Project, both of which were Scholarship of Teaching and Learning initiatives at Cerritos College.   Jan has also administered several sizeable federal Title III and Title V grants.
