Weaving Community at Feather River Fall Regional Summit

On September 13th, Los Angeles-area 3CSN coordinators Joanna Zimring-Towne and Kelan Koning had the great pleasure of experiencing the crispness of autumn as they journeyed far north to Feather River College for the first of six fall regional summits.  BSILI 2019 team Joan Jarrett, Carlie McCarthy, and Michelle Petroelie, an incredible group of 35 students and educators from as far away as Sacramento, and three regional coordinators from the Chancellor’s Office, meaningfully engaged in a day of community-building, learning, and sharing.

Joan Jarrett set the tone for the event by powerfully sharing her BSILI team’s aspirational metaphor and journey.  After an overview and introductions, participants shared artifacts of their own educational journeys.  This was followed by shared reading and discussion of a text set focused on weaving, community, and transformation.  Once this was complete, campus teams engaged in Appreciative Inquiry surrounding what community and weaving already exist on their campuses and what they would like to see.  They then collaborated to create visual representations.  After a delicious lunch provided by the amazing Chef Sean and team,  participants engaged in a gallery walk giving appreciations and feedback for their colleagues’ ideas through dots and post-its.

Next on the agenda was a guided reading and discussion of Peter Mayo’s “Praxis” .  This led to a rich discussion of praxis in light of statewide initiatives.  Participants considered the opportunity that the initiatives hold for campuses as we strive to close equity gaps and better serve students overall.

The rest of the day was dedicated to team time as participants completed praxis plans and linked up with another campus for peer review.  This led to some excellent exchanges as participants were able to hear what others were doing to build community on their campuses.  As the day ended, many were reluctant to leave, grateful to have gained new contacts and renewed commitment to the possibilities.  We can’t wait to return in the Spring for more community, learning, and fun!
