23 Gavilan College campus leaders recently gathered for a 1-day workshop to begin a collaborative inquiry into integrated student success planning. Educators from Admissions and Records, counseling, learning assistance, institutional research, and others involved in multiple student success initiatives began the day with several foundational theoretical frames upon which to build an ongoing conversation. The team explored principles of good integrated planning, Appreciative Inquiry, and the Equity Framework.
Then, using the Student Success Crosswalk as a guide, participants began to share various student success activities currently available to Gavilan students and to identify “convergent goals” that cut across the initiatives and practices. In the afternoon, participants looked at ongoing campus student success activities through the lens of the five student equity “gateways”: Access, Course Success, Pathway Completion, Degree and Certificate Completion, and Transfer. During the last portion of the day, groups chose an equity gateway and identified potential innovation in that area. Finally, the entire group discussed ways in which the college could keep this conversation moving forward.
This was the beginning of an ongoing campus conversation about integration and collaboration. We look forward to see how Gavilan moves forward as thy continue to meet, share, and integrate efforts!
